Can’t swipe up to exit an app

Hi guys

I cannot swipe up to exit an app

every time I want to exit an app I have to turn my iPhone xr off

I have tried shut down by holding the power button and swiping across

I’ve also tried rebooting the phone - volume button then volume button down and hold finger on power button until Apple icon appears

I am on the latest iOS

what else can I do bar factory reset?

iPhone XR, iOS 15

Does the touch screen otherwise work just fine?

Did you recently do anything to your phone, like a major iPhone update or get a new case or screen protector that may be preventing you from getting your finger to the very bottom of the screen?

If you just recently did a major iOS update, you may need to get used to the newer gestures. I think it was between iOS 13 and iOS 14/15 where they changed it up a bit.

If recently getting a new case or screen protector, you may need to take em off and test to see if that's the problem.

I just tested on my phone and there isn't a whole lot of wiggle room there.. I have to swipe up on the bottom ~1/8 inch or so of the screen.

Another thing you could try is Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Assistive Touch

Turn on Assistive Touch, it'll place a white dot on your screen that you can move around by tap/hold/dragging it.

In that same menu area, select Customize Top Level Menu.

Hit the minus sign until it says 1 icon. (you can play with more icons later)

Tap on the available function in the center of the greyed out area.. a list pops up.

You can select Home to get the functionality you want.

Press Done in the upper right.

now go into an app such as Safari. Tap that white floating button once and you should go to your Home Screen. Tap it twice and it should show the App Switcher..

Hi Chris0107

Thank you for your reply.

Yes otherwise the touch screen is 100% perfect. I can swipe up perfectly to unlock the phone and open the home screen. It's literally only once the screen is unlocked the swipe up does not work anymore.

I updated to IOS 15.2 about 10 days before this issue began. I got a new screen protector fitted for $40 about 8 days before this started.

I tried recovery mode today. I plugged my iPhone XR to my Macbook Pro via USB and did a full update following a restore. Issue was not resolved.

Assisitive Touch is what I was looking for as a workaround thank you. The problem is not fixed but I do have a workaround.

I'd rather not remove the screen protector because the swipe up is working perfectly until the home screen or an app appears which makes me think the protector isn't the issue. Am I right in saying swiping to unlock the screen and swiping up to exit an app is the same gesture?
