Hi, I am trying to set up and ipod 4th generation for our daughter, I have managed to log in to icloud but every time I try to log in to itunes/appstore it says unable to connect to itunes store. Any ideas?
We have updated software to ios 6.1.6 and it says it's now up to date.

That's an old model of iPod. Access to the iTunes Store now requires a later version of iOS, which that model cannot install. It's a security measure, put in place a while ago.
The message that your iPod's software is up to date is correct, but misleading. It means that the iPod has the most up to date version of software for that model. Yes, there are later versions of iOS, but that model cannot run them.
If you have music in an iTunes Library (say from CDs or Amazon purchases), you can still synchronise the iPod with that iTunes Library and get music onto the iPod.
