sync watch series 7 to ios 14.8

I was planning on preordering an Apple Watch Series on Friday. However, my iPhone 12 Pro is at ios 14.8. Will I have to upgrade the phone to 15 in order to sync the new watch? If so, that is a show stopper for me until they get some of the bugs fixed in 15. Thank you.

Yes,the watch will have WatchOS8 and this will require a phone with at least ios15.
