Software update

I am trying to update my MacBook Pro, and I can't find where to. I googled it, and it says I won't have a software update icon in system preferences unless I have 10.13 or newer. Then, it says to go to the App Store to find software updates. I did that and there are no updates available. How can I update my laptop to the newest version?

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and if your MacBook Pro model is capable of a newer OS, click on El Capitan, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur. They're full-version upgrades and won't appear in the Updates list.
