i was updating my XR.... the phone is now dead. I have tried the up/down/ on buttons as suggested on the help section.... phone still dead... any other work arounds?

It may be time to make an appointment at the nearest Apple Store for an evaluation and explanation of your options....

Im sending the phone back it's under warrantee
I booked in with genius bar they confirmed phone a brick and replaced with a new one
