I can't get my Apple Music subscription to work on my Mac

My Apple Music subscription is not recognised by the music.app. On my iPad and my iPhone it works without any problems.

When I click on "Browse Apple Music", nothing happens.

The corresponding menu item is missing in the music.app preferences.

The menu item "Account" is missing.

Things I have tried so far:

• Deleting the Music directory in the user directory with all the files it contains (Music Library.musiclibrary).
• Deleting all obvious iTunes and music.app relevant files and directories in the Library folder.
• Logging out of my Apple ID in the system settings, rebooting, logging in again.

I am at my wit's end.
