My current phone is a company phone and archaic. We use to get upgrades when warranted but since pandemic every man/woman for themselves....lol. That said, if I wanted to get an update I need to purchase an unlocked phone. I do not need a phone plane just want to take existing sim and add to new purchase. How do I make sure the phone I'm ordering online comes unlocked so I can have our IT add sim and get started? I don't want to purchase a phone and it arrives and it's not what I need. Trying to avoid any further delays. It's been a feat to say the least in getting a new phone. Went into the Apple store today and explained my situation and I was told for what I want to do I need to do online. So, here I am:) Any feedback is appreciated.

No problem. When you go through the Apple online store when ordering a new iPhone, you are given the option to select whether you want an unlocked phone or one locked to a particular cellular carrier. Again, this would be for the U.S. store. AFAIK, that is the only store where you can get unlocked phones.

You can give this a try yourself. You can always stop at the point where you would commit to buying it. You will also see there will be an option to trade-in a phone.
