The orange indicator will appear when the microphone is active and disappear when it is not being used. An easy way to demonstrate this is to, when you're on a call, mute the call then unmute it. You'll see the indicator disappear when you mute the call (disable the mic) and reappear when you unmute it (reenable the mic).
