Will this (new) external dvd payer work with on my Mac with Big Sur 11.4 installed. I had an older apple superdrive but it refused to work on the mac or my MacBook air 2020 so I think it was damaged. I need to buy a new DVD payer.

My Apple USB SuperDrive, Model A1379 works with my iMac Mid 2015 running Big Sur 11.4 just fine.
It plays CDs, DVDs, installs software and all of it.
I just tested on my MBPro 16" and it works there too with Big Sur 11.4.

The Apple superdrive should work on any Mac that does not have a built in super drive. I do not have a brand new Mac, so I cannot speak as to the compatibility with M1 models - best to ask Apple about that. However, there are other external third party products which will work. Try to pick one that has its own power supply as the plug in types sometimes require more power than the USB ports offer, and a tray drive is more reliable (and can accept different sizes of media) than the slot models.
That's very helpful. I was a bit doubtful about third party players as they all state working with Mac OS systems but not specifically Big Sur. There are some cheaper ones on Amazon - what do you think about them. Thanks

I've used one from OWC (macsales.com) for years; has worked with any OS since 10.7. FWIW, you will no longer get an icon on your desktop when you plug it in, but once you insert media, that should show up if you have your Finder Preferences set to show them.

SuperDrive works just fine with M1 iMac 24" running Big Sur 11.4 – read and write.
It will as long as it is connected directly to your Mac and not through a hub.

Had an old Samsung DVD burner (about 6, 7 years old) plugged into an Intel iMac with Big Sur the other day, and it worked. I wonder if this can be generalized? Don't know ...

I have 2 Samsung and one off brand drive from Amazon and all work fine with my MBA M1 and Big Sur.
