Security feature in OS 10.13.3 is blocking KEXT extensions when connecting a 3rd party audio interface.

The security feature in OS 10.13.3 is apparently blocking KEXT extensions when I connect a 3rd party audio interface. In OS 10.13.6 it looks like one is able to get around this through the Security and Privacy Menu which shows the last blocked application at the bottom of the menu with a button to Allow the exception. In OS 10.13.3, the last blocked application does not show up and there is no button to allow anything. How can we solve this so I can use the interface..

Why 10.13.3 instead of 10.13.6???

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

https://pastebin.com/

Whew, they've changed pastebin & made it harder, but after pasting in, click Create new paste button, then Embed button, then copy the URL...

<script src="https://pastebin.com/embed_js/KuvnghqA"></script>

The important part of the above is between the quote marks...

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...

Thanks BDAqua, I appreciate your being patient with me. It looks like I've done something wrong. After starting up in Safe Mode, the top menu bar started flickering (Spotlight icon disappearing and returning). Attempted to use Safari to get back here, but it now crashes every time I attempt to log into anything. So I'm back on Firefox now after running Etrecheck again. Report attached. Unfortunately, it looks like there is a lot to fix, and the majority of it seems to be beyond my knowledge; in particular, the "Bug" at the end, also the launch daemons and agents which don't show up when I search for them. That Kext which caused problems initially, is in a disabled extensions list, from where it seems I cannot remove it. Any help appreciated.

Whew, we either have a hardware problem or corrupted install is my first thoughts here.

But might try this 1st...

Open Terminal and run each of these...

sudo mdutil -E /

This basically asks for temporary super user status, which is why Terminal may ask you for your password (it may not if you’ve used a sudo command recently or are already logged in as a super user or root. The command asks the unix tool mdutil to reindex the spotlight database for everything on the computer, including external drives, mounted disk images, etc. To re-index only for a specific drive, use the /Volumes path. For example, for an external drive named “MiniMe,” the command would look like this:

sudo mdutil -i on /

Rebuilding a drive index can take a long time, so be prepared to wait whether you do it through the System Preference panel or the command line. A few minutes normally.

If still crashing Try installing this in Safe Mode, but not using Firefox as it’ll mess things up…

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup).

Seems to fix about 90% of the problems.

I have tried the suggested links. I was able to download and get into the installation process for 10.13.6. At completion, it said install was successful. However, I am still only on 10.13.3. I got on a chat with Apple Support, then a phone call. They confirmed that my late 2011 MacBook Pro 8,1 will not update any further. I don't understand that since it is still just High Sierra, that it's stuck. I think the compatibility for High Sierra only refers to the earlier versions of High Sierra. Still trying to find another work-around for the security feature which blocks the 3rd party Kext.

May 28, 2021 3:15 PM in response to Markhsw3

There was supposed to be a way to override the security feature by opening an application from a new Finder Window. That didn't work, either.

I still have a few more hairs left to pull out. . .

Apple Support, in my phone call, said a possibility would be to try Internet Recovery by holding Option+Command+r keys, but there may be risks to losing data and . . . As Etrecheck pointed-out, I need to do back-ups.

Thanks for all help.
