Unlocking iPhone for new SIM card

I am a college student who is studying abroad in the UK this summer. I have heard that I can "unlock" my iPhone to put a UK SIM card in it so that I can use it while I am abroad. What does the unlocking process look like and how long would this take? Also, would I buy a new SIM card when I get to the UK or before?

iPhone 8, iOS 14

You need to contact your current carrier to get the phone unlocked. Then do this: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201328. Then you will need to contact a carrier in the UK for service and a SIM card.
