Install Big Sur iOS

My MacBook has a very small hard drive (120GB) and when I try to install the new Big Sur iOS I do not have enough disk space. Can I install the iOS onto my MacBook if I have the iOS update files downloaded to a connected USB hard drive?

Big Sur requires 35.5GBs free on the internal drive.
