iMessage opens with a new message automatically

Suddenly, for no discernible reason, every time I open the message app, it starts a new blank message. I would like to turn this off since I have to tap cancel to get rid of the new message.

My phone is a XS Max.

Actually, I turned iMessge off and then back on and the behavior ceased. Thanks anyway.
