How do I stop mail from automatically opening unread mail. It is EXTREMELY bothersome.

Every time I go into Mail, rather than displaying my list of messages the app automatically opens my next unread email. Often I have just read an email, switch to a different app to look up some thing so I can reply, and return to mail, yet again it opens the next unread email.

I don’t want the emails to automatically be opened. How do I stop this “functionality?”

Hello Ncstater2,

It sounds like Mail keeps opening your last unread message.

You can try some isolation and troubleshooting steps. Here are some resources that can help:

  • If you have multiple email accounts, see if it's isolated to just one account.
    • Close the Mail app. Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch
    • Navigate to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
    • Turn off Mail for every account but one.
    • Open the Mail app and see if it continues.
    • Do this for each account to see if it's a particular account doing this.

Hope this information helps.

Have a good day.
