Unable to attach files from computer to emails

Over the past couple of months I have been unable to attach files - documents or photos - to any outgoing emails. I use Yahoo Mail, also Gmail. This problem applies to both. I am wondering if I have done something unwittingly to prevent this ability. I am using MacBook Air. I would appreciate suggestions. Thank you.
