How can I put the battery percentage on the screen on an iPhone XR

There is no option to permanently display it at the top right of the screen. It can be viewed by opening Control Center (swipe down from the top right). Another option is to add a widget to the home screen -- see: Use widgets on your iPhone and iPod touch - Apple Support
