How to have the Apple TV trigger a scene

I would like to have the state of the Apple TV trigger a scene.

Scene 1: room lights dimmed at 100%

Scene 2: room lights dimmed at 5%

Scene 3: room lights dimmed at 20%

Let’s say, I start with Scene 1 activated. I would like to have my Apple TV in an automation trigger Scene 2 as soon as it is playing a movie or TV show. Then, when I pause—I have to take bathroom breaks from time to time when binge-watching a show—I’d like an automation recognize that the Apple TV is paused and activate Scene 3. When pressing Play again, I’d like the earlier automation to kick in again and dim down the lights. Finally, when the movie or show is finished playing, I’d like another automation to activate Scene 1 again.

How would I go about doing this in the Home App? I can’t seem to be able to incorporate the Apple TV into any automations.

The Apple TV does appear as an accessory in the Home app, however. I think, Apple needs to update the ecosystem to make this possible.

I am also on hold waiting for an AppleCare adviser to definitively tell me that it cannot be done.

What you can do with Apple TV is limited. There might be a way with Shortcuts.

There could also be a way to make a shortcut called “pause Apple TV” that operates lights, because you can ask Siri on your iOS device to pause and play/ resume Apple TV without making any scene, it just does it. It could trick it into doing both, but not likely. You might be able to accomplish the last one to turn off Apple TV and set your lights to their final brightness by using a goodnight scene. You can customize scenes to name them whatever you want. I haven’t tested this. I don’t think we have a Shortcuts forum on here to have more experienced helpers advise. We don’t have a HomeKit forum either.
