If I use a HD that has other files on it for my back up HD, will the back up process erase other files on the HD? Or make a separate folder for back up ?

If Time Machine needs to reformat the volume, it'll erase other data on it. Otherwise, it'll remain, but your working data and backups should be on separate drives; one may fail at any time.

Thanks Niel! I went to Best Buy (some distance away from where I live and didn't want to make that trek in the rain) and bought a new WD 2TB external. You are so right. Everything should be clean. Just wanted to know, in a pinch, if one used an external with other files on it, if TM would automatically erase the disc before it backed up your computer. I was considering my G-Tech drive that had 3 TB on it. Thanks again.
