Access your music library on all your devices - Apple Support
Being logged in under the same Apple ID on all devices that you want to listen on is mandatory for your subscription to be recognized.

That was a good solution. The problem turned out to be that I just needed to do a restart of my Mac to update everything. Worked like a char. The few times I have contacted Apple about issues this has been a maddeningly consistent, forehead thumping answer.
