MacBook Pro recognises the microphone as a pair of headphones

I have a microphone that connects via headphone jack. When I plug it in to my mid 2012 13'macbook pro it recognises the microphone as a pair of headphones. Then when I go into "input" section in system preferences the only option that comes up is the laptops internal microphone.

I don't believe the microphone is defective as it works on my windows desktop fine. Is there any way to get it to work on my macbook?

There are audio adapters that combine microphone and headphones.

An earlier example of (3.5 + USB-A) image ~ found online w/ search:

A+to+3.5mm+adapter+for+2012+MacBook+Pro&t=ffab&ia=web

"USB to 3.5mm Jack Audio Adapter, Cable Creation External USB Stereo

Sound Card with 3.5mm Headset and Microphone Jack"

Good luck & happy trails!

PS: this idea can work with the 2012 MacBook Pro with USB-A port.
