If you are wanting to migrate from the old iMac to a new Mac Mini? Then your best bet, is to plug the old iMac's Time Machine backup into the new Mac Mini and migrate during the initial setup.

If you do not have a Time Machine backup, then you have some options.

  1. Using a string of expensive FireWire to USB-C adapters. (Target Disk Mode)
  2. Using your local Wi-Fi network. (Wi-Fi is slow and ends up failing 99% of the time)
  3. A direct Ethernet cable connection. (much better than Wi-Fi, but slow for large amounts of data)
  4. Use an external drive. (make a Time Machine backup of the old iMac and plug it into the new Mac Mini)
