Can an iPhone SE 2020 be charged with the older iphone charging cable/plug that was used by the iPhone 6? Or does it require the purchase of an adapter plug for the new cable that it comes with (I believe a USB-C power adapter)?

It can use the iPhone 6's cable with the iPhone 6's USB-A power adapter / charger just fine yes.
It can also use the USB-C to Lightning cable it comes with with a USB-C power adapter / charger that can be bought separately or one that comes with an iPad Pro or Mac computer.
You cannot use the USB-C to Lughtning cable it comes with the power adapter / charger from the iPhone 6 as they use a different connection.

Thank you! Just one further thing I wanted to check - does it do any damage to the phone battery to charge using an old cable/plug, i.e. not use the one recommended for the SE 2020? Or is it just a case of it not charging so quickly?
It uses a USB-A connection.
You can use your old charger lead and brick but not the new lead and old brick as it is a different connection

It will not damage the iPhone no. Depending on the power rating of the old charger it may charge more slowly yes.
Please connect with your new box pack charger you know what new charger is type of iPhone se please connect with new charger and solve your problem
