Changing number associated with iMessage

Hi, when I upgraded my phone and changed providers I seem to have got the temporary number, given to me by the new provider before my PAC code transferred, set as my iMessage number and can’t get rid of it. This means that my contacts receive messages from a number they don’t recognise. I have tried to deregister it but never receive the code when I go through the process
