Using iMac as extended display for MacbookPro

I want to use an iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013) as an external monitor or extended display for my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012). Do I only need a thunderbolt cable? Both computers have such port. Thanks!

Yes, a TB cable & the iMac needs to be running 10.13.6 or less.

Target display mode requires macOS High Sierra or earlier on the iMac used as the external display. It does not work with macOS Mojave or later.
