Can I have 2 external hard drives connected to my iMac at the same time?

Hi, I have an external hard drive connected to my iMac and linked to Time Machine to back up the Mac. I considering connecting a 2d hard drive just for photos. Can the Mac operate with 2 drives connected? The 2d won't be connected to Time machine. I've heard that there may be an issue when I turn on or restart the computer. Thanks

You can have more than one drive attached. The iMac I'm on now has three. The only issue would be a very slight performance hit accessing the second drive while Time Machine is backing up. Very slight.
