sudden constant "do you want to share teh WI-Fi password for "xxxx network" with "MAcBook Pro" message on my phone

Two days ago, both my iPhone 11Pro Max and my wife's iPhone 8 suddenly began displying this message everytime they wake up! Our home network which hasn't changed, though had to re-start wifi router a few days prior to this issue. Have never seen it in all the years of owning iPhones, though I note old questions about this issue in the community forum. Any ideas how to get rid of it?

If you have...

  • On both devices, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on without Personal Hotspot on,
  • Signed into iCloud with your Apple ID. Then if the email address you use for your Apple ID is saved in the other person's Contacts. And you have their email address saved in your Contacts.
  • The other person's device is nearby, within Bluetooth and Wi-Fi range.

Not sure what to do with "if you have..." None of settings on either phone were changed, nor the computer. I do note that my phone asks about sharing with my MacBook Pro while my wife's asks about a different computer. If you meant for the setting to be set up as you describe in the first point - did that, no change. Have no idea what your second point means, and yes, our phones are nearby, as they often are. Your GIF is just what I'm seeing.

Thanks for trying - can you explain further or have other ideas? Anyone?

If your router was off your Mac would try to connect to the hotspot provided by your phone, that’s why you were prompted. On your computers make sure that they are not connected to the hotspot. The other possibility is that someone near you is trying to steal use of your hotspot. Go to Settings/Cellular/Personal Hotspot and turn off Allow others to join. And if that doesn’t fix it turn off the hotspot completely.

OK, time for Plan B. On your Mac click on the Wi-Fi “fan” and select “Open network preferences”. Click on Wi-Fi in the left column if it isn’t already selected, then click on Advanced. Find the iPhone(s) in the list, click on them and click the “-“ sign to remove them from the search list. As an alternative, if they are the first entries on the list drag them further down. Close Advanced and click Apply.
