I would like help on how to created an extended desktop across two screens
One would be my 2017 iMac and the other would be my 2018 MacBook Pro.
I don’t mind which is my main brain but I just can’t seem to get them talking to each other.

As mentioned it is not possible on a 2017 iMac. Target Display Mode was discontinued when the Retina Model iMacs became available in 2015. TDM was available from late 2009 27" iMacs through 2014 iMacs. This means if you need an external display for your MBP you need to buy one.

Your 2017 iMac is too new for Target Display Mode.
So it’s not possible at all? Unless I buy a stand alone monitor?
I guess I was not clear enough, NO, TDM WILL NOT WORK WITH YOUR CURRENT EQUIPMENT!
