mpeg to mp4 - What is Up with this?

Can some one who knows video and video containers please explain to me why EVERY application I have tried ALWAYS saves/exports QT (MP4 selected) as mpeg... Yet the file extension states mp4.

File name: test-video.mp4 = File Kind: MPEG

What the F'ing **** is going on?

I am trying to upload an MP4 to the web and no matter what app i try, i constantly get MPEG, and browsers that are MP4 compatible will not recognize the file format.

Please, anyone, some help would be great.

Thanks!

Thank you for the additional information.

The .mp4 suffix designates an MPEG-4 file. More precisely, MPEG-4 Part 14 specifies the digital multimedia container format MP4, which mostly (but not exclusively) uses the .mp4 suffix in the filenames.

I believe HTML5 video wants MP4 files to use the H.264 codec for video and the AAC codec for audio. That is, other codecs are very unlikely to be supported. MP4 can use other codes as well, so verify that these codecs are used.

What is the format of the source file (before save/export)?

What is the origin of the source file? Possibly there is something special/irregular with that. The format of an iPhone recording is well known, but a file from a friend of a friend can be anything.

Just MPEG isn’t very specific. There is MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. Where do you see this ‘MPEG’ specification?

Is that still accurate? Please include the software and their versions which you used/tried for exporting. Unknown software may have export options that we know nothing about, different from current software.

Greetings, thank you for your reply.

I have been working/exporting out of Final Cut 10.2

"File name" ends with .mp4

But "File Kind" (identified in the finder) as MPEG-4

Many of these I believe to be mp4 format (which I think MPEG-4 designates?) yet I find these files will not identify as mp4 files when trying to get a HTML 5 browser to display... I get not mp4 file type error message.... if that make sense.

Thanks for any comments.
