Why does Photos open some photos with an exclamation point in a triangle?

That doesn’t make sense, I’ve been scanning son’s photos for months, he passed away a yr & 1/2 ago. All photos came through, until now. Some do & some come up with the triangle w/exclamation in middle.
My iMac is (24 in mid 2007)
El Capitan version 10.11.6
Is this computer too old?
Because the app cannot find the original file.

No, age has nothing to do with it. Have you been using anything to "clean up" or "tune up" your mac?
No, not in a long time. I actually don’t know how to do that. Someone else did it for me before.
what do I do? Sorry I’m used to doing what I need to do & not very good to my 🍎.
