How do i upgrade to OS 10.13.0- i have OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

I have a similar situation. My Mac is slightly older, late 2013, running Yosemite 10.10.5. Is it safe to jump straight from that old OS to Catalina? If not, where can I find the older OS? I contacted Apple once and was told I might need to bring the desktop in and have it done in the store.

This Macintosh model does support macOS 10.13 High Sierra. Alternatively it also supports the latest release of macOS, macOS 10.15 Catalina. You can find macOS Catalina on the App Store.
