Draft printing problem

I've just bought a Canon PIXMA TR8550 printer. It won't print in draft from my MBP which is using the Mojave OS. Canon cannot provide a driver for OS since Sierra and say that the problem is caused by AirPrint, which is apparently allocated by Apple when installing the printer. Is there any way of installing the printer without AirPrint because it is not satisfactory not to be able to print in draft?

My supplier has agreed to take this printer back fortunately. Canon tell me that Apple won't allow them (and other printer companies) to write drivers for up to date printers and High Sierra and later, which I find surprising though I haven't discussed that with Apple Support. Apparently Windows computers have no similar problems. They suggested I could replace the TR8550 with one of a few models released in 2014/15!

I tried this suggestion as I have the same problem and it didn't work. Even when connected with USB you cannot install the printer without using AirPrint and therefore there is no option to choose draft. I can't get the printer to install without AirPrint as there are no drivers available to download on Canon website - it just advises that all Canon printers use AirPrint now (my model is Canon Pixma TS5151).

Thanks D I Johnson I've just spent most of the morning trying your solution but, as srendell says, there seems to be no way to avoid AirPrint. In trying to set an alternative I got a message saying that Apple provide no other software than AirPrint and to contact Canon - but Canon provide no driver for this printer with Mojave. I spoke to Canon support yesterday and they told me that I could only use draft if I was using Sierra OS12 - but actually that is listed as a minimum software requirement - this is all very frustrating - but thanks for responding to my query.

Thanks srendell for your reply - and as I've just said to D I Johnson I've found exactly the same as you! I only bought a new printer because my 10 year old PIXMA MP990 stopped working because it needed a new ink absorber which was going to cost almost as much to have replaced as buying a new printer! I'm not at all happy with either Canon or Apple at the moment!
