Apple TV will not hold passcode with new remote

We lost our original remote for Apple TV. Got a new one, set it up and it works, but we have to re-enter Apple passcode every time. While using Apple TV if we click back to far, it will again require the passcode entered. This is so tedious, we have not used our Apple TV in months, but would like to start using it again. Any ideas what to do about this? Also is there an app for iPhone that would make putting passcode in easier. I can't believe entering passcode with the remote can be the only way to do it. Takes forever!

What is your model remote? Identify your Apple TV remote - Apple Support

Also is there an app for iPhone that would make putting passcode in easier.

Yes there is. ‎Apple TV Remote app on the iOS App Store

With an on-screen keyboard and a possibility for Keychain access to passwords. Requires iCloud for text input prompt.
