Yes. You should always have more than one browser on your computer—if one fails then you still have a convenient way reaching out to the internet.
In my work flow I always have two browser open at all times, the default and my main working browser.
How do you set one as the default and one that is not? I want to keep the Safari that's my main browser and just have Firefox available because one website I want to work on says my Safari is too old. I don't want to change Safari because I have some older programs that will not work on a new Safari with a newer Mac OS. I'm currently running Sierra

When you first open Firefox it will ask. Just say no. :)
You can have as many browsers as you like.
EDIT: That a very old version of Safari, which version of Mac OS are you running?
There is only the setting to set the default browser. You just have to open whichever secondary browser you want to use manually.
Is that a choice that comes up on a window when I download the Firefox browser? So I would answer NO if asked to set the Firefox to the default?? Thank you.
