How do I turn off or disable 'find my iphone' in order to register for a replacement device through Verizon for a damaged phone? Is it the 'erase' setting?

If you cannot access the iPhone to turn if off from Settings, then yes, erasing it from the iCloud website or another device, and then removing it from your account effectively turns off Find My iPhone.
