What settings and connection type is needed to externally boot a 2018 MacBook Air?

Looking to setup an external drive with OSX 10.12 so I can continue to work with several programs. What settings and connection type is needed to externally boot a 2018 MacBook Air? Will a specific external drive or enclosure work better than others?

If this laptop has the T2 security chip, then you will also need to modify the system security settings to allow booting from an external drive. Here is an Apple article on how to allow booting from external drives:
