Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

I may be having the same issue. I've attempted to restart and install many times, with no success. The system reboots and I'm presented with the same state ... Software Update window with a restart now button.

Curiously, at the same time I began having issues with Chrome. Here, I can't get the browser to start at all. It attempts (bouncy icon) then I see "Application Not responding" when I try to open.

No guarantee the two are related.
