If you have purchased an Apple Watch with watchOS 6, then keep in mind that Apple has a 14 day return policy, and if you can return it you can always save the money until you get a newer iPhone that will work with an Apple Watch.
The current Apple Watch models come with watchOS 6 and require an iPhone 6s, SE, 7, 8, X, XS, XR, 11 or 11 Pro with iOS 13.
