about once a week I get a message saying my computer is infected with a virus. I don't know if this is legitimate message or a scam??

It is always a scam. No-one can detect remotely whether you have a virus: and it's most unlikely you do anyway: there are no viruses in the wild affecting Macs. DO NOT ever respond to these messages: at best they are trying to sell you useless and possibly dangerous software.
