recently my MacBook air goes completely dark when the brightness goes below full. this also means i can not charge it while still on it because when you do that it automatically dims the screen and you cannot brighten it. i am a bit stumped on what i should do and would love some help

Try an SMC reset and PRAM reset (hold the PRAM reset for a minute so it activates several times).
If this doesn't work, then you will need to take the laptop to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to be repaired.
No, but you may need to reset the Date & Time in System Preferences and reselect your boot drive as the default in Startup Disk System Preferences.
