My iPad has blocked. I can't exit the app and I can't turn it off.

My iPad has blocked. I can't exit the app and I can't turn it off. Any suggestions or must I buy a new one? It is 7 or 8 years old.

Have you tried : If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen - Apple Support ?

It was on and it was frozen. I couldn't turn it off. The screen was also blank. However, I took it to a store to possibly buy a new one and the expert there brought it back to life. He depressed the Home and turn off buttons simultaneously for a while. It then recovered. I didn't know this trick.
