I add a new artist as a new smart playlist. I then click on my ipod, and then music (under the settings heading at the top) the new artist appears on the left hand side under the playlist list, but not on the right hand side list under artist, where it should be showing as well.
Does your library contain any downloaded and checked tracks with this Artist or Album Artist where part or a compilation is set to false? Although iTunes provides five different places where you can add content for syncing, the four obvious ones you can see, and the ability to manually select and drag/drop specific items which is listed below those four, only one needs to be used to ensure that the content is synced.

The artist is not a part of a compilation as far as I know. I have entered the artist name in the search field and it only shows his songs. Is there any other way to find out if he is in a any other artists songs?
Can you post a screenshot highlighting what you see as the problem? Also post the rules to your smart playlist. Does it contain their songs?

I have deleted the artist and all his songs, rebooted computer, tweaked the rules and added them on again. Now showing.
