Use multiple external drive?

I use a external drive with Time Machine as backup. Can I continue that while also connecting a 1T external for storing memorabilia, much of which would be scanned?

Hello gavahu,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. I see you have a question about Time Machine.

To clarify, it sounds like you want to use one external drive to back up using Time Machine, and then connect a second drive for separate media storage. Is that correct? If so, you should have no problem doing this.

Depending on what you want to do, you can opt to either include or exclude the media storage drive from your Time Machine backup using the steps from the article titled Back up your Mac with Time Machine:

  • "To exclude items from your backup, open Time Machine preferences, click Options, then click the Add (+) button to add an item to be excluded. To stop excluding an item, such as an external hard drive, select the item and click the Remove (–) button."

I hope this has answered your question. Best wishes.

It looks as if you hit the nail on the head. Upon reviewing your input and the articles referred to, I am confident that what I propose to do will work. I am now ready to purchase a [second] external drive, to be 1T capacity for memorabilia storage. Thanks again!
