MacBook Air M3: Inconsistent headphone detection

I have a Macbook Air M3 and beyerdynamic DT 880 Premium Edition 600 ohm headphones. As I understand from the support article below, my Macbook supports high-impedance headphones so they should get 3 volt RMS upon plugging in. Sometimes they get reasonable volume and other times it is very low volume so I do not think the detection is working correctly. I have to unplug and replug in multiple times to get reasonable volume. Volume bar is all the way at max in audio settings and in audio midi settings. Is there a way to force the detection to use 3 volt RMS or make it detect better? This is on macOS Tahoe 26.2 but it has also occurred in prior versions of Tahoe and Ventura. I have been using the third party app eqMac as a workaround when the unplug replug method fails repeatedly.
