Swipe to Delete Messages in MacOS26.2

Swipe to delete messages in MacOS26.2 is not working. When I re-start the application, it works again for a short period of time. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

Sometimes methods of working can change a little (or a lot) as MacOS is given new features, or upgraded.

Wondering if Apple Support's online article for MacOS Tahoe 26 (link below) can help:

See: Delete messages and conversations in Messages on Mac - Apple Support

Eg: says:

"Delete messages and attachments

  1. Go to the Messages app on your Mac.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. Select one or more messages (including text messages, photos, videos, files, web links, audio messages or emoji) in the transcript, press Delete, then click Delete in the dialogue.

Note: When you delete a message, it’s moved to the Recently Deleted folder on your device, but not anyone else’s. When you want to delete a message for everyone, use Undo Send within 2 minutes of sending it."

Seems the only swipe action now is in the sidebar when you delete a single conversation:

(see the "Tip" below for the details:)

Eg: Above article also says:

"Delete a conversation

  1. Go to the Messages app on your Mac.
  2. Search for a conversation.
  3. Delete any of the following:
  • A single conversation: Select a conversation, Control-click, then choose Delete.
    • Tip: If you have a trackpad or a Magic Mouse, swipe left with two fingers on the conversation in the sidebar, then click .
    • An empty conversation: Move the pointer over an empty conversation, then click .
    • Several conversations at the same time: Select the conversations in the sidebar, Control-click, then choose Delete."

Thank you for the reply, but the question still remains for the function of the "swipe" option while using the magic mouse to manipulate control over a conversation residing in the sidebar. ie; Swipe left with 1 finger to select the delete icon, or block. Swipe right to mark read, or unread. When I began to write this message, swiping left or right had no effect allowing me a control option of a message in the sidebar. I then closed the message application, re-opened it and the function returned as intended.
