Issue on Photos app (Tahoe)

Since I upgraded to Tahoe I am not able to see that Photos finished recognizing people. I have a 265GB Library on iCloud with 27000 pictures. I have tried to let the computer on for days… and didn’t finish. Tried also with clean installation when 26.1 was released and also with repair library.

With Sequoia or Sonoma took a week maximum.

thanks in advance for your help and support.

Definitely try manually naming a face (do you have King Tut?) as léonie suggested to jog Photos into paying attention to faces.

Have you re-started the computer? You can also try re-starting in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes, and it often helps. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

See how things go, then re-start normally and wait to see if naming gets better.

For a library with 27000 pictures and videos the faces scan may take much longer than a few days. Keep your computer up and running at all times, even when you re not using it. It will help to restart it occasionally and opening Photos again to ensure that the background processes of Photos are running.as long as you can still see all previously named faces in the People & Pets album you can already work with the named faces.

What is the status message you are seeing when you open the People&Pets album?

If it is not showing any faces thumbnails at all, you could try to add a face manually on some photo.

Try this:

  • Enable in the View Menu the option "Show faces names", if it is not already enabled.
  • Open any photo of a person or a pet and open the Info with ⌘I .
  • In the Info click the + to add a face and draw a circle around a face. Name it.

When the face recognition seemed to be stuck for my library, naming a face manually helped to bring the previously named faces forward.

I don't use Optimize on my Mac, so I don't know if that's true.

If you can turn off Optimize and download all your pictures, I wonder why you're using Optimize. Be sure to not let the free storage on your Mac fall below 10%. 15% is better.

You didn't say anything about your Mac model, storage, or OS. You can use an external drive for the Library, which may give you more room. Here's an idea of how to do both

It will be easier anyway, if you download the originals. Otherwise your Time Machine backup will not include the originals of all photos and it is much harder to make regular backups of your Photos. Also, Photos will be faster, when you are working with your photos, if the originals are stored locally.

But the faces scan will still take a long time and will only be done, when you are not using the app, because it needs a lot of processing power.
