macOS changes removed support for separate browser-profile launchers

In recent macOS versions, certain system changes have removed the ability for browsers to offer separate launchers or Dock icons for different profiles. Chrome and Edge both used to support this, and Safari has never offered it.

This used to be incredibly helpful for productivity and keeping work and personal browsing separate. Each profile could have its own icon, its own window setup, and its own place in Mission Control.

Now, the system does not allow browsers to create separate launch points in a reliable way. Workarounds like using Automator are inconsistent and do not behave like true profile launchers.

This feels like a step backward for those of us who depend on multiple profiles. It would be great if macOS supported a way for apps to offer profile-specific launch options again.

Is anyone else experiencing this limitation? I’d appreciate hearing from others who rely on multiple profiles.

While there is a profile manager, Chromium removed true native per-profile Dock icons in their 140+ builds. Reason being, recent platform and security changes in macOS - particularly in how application bundles are signed, duplicated, validated, and recognized by the system - have unintentionally removed or broken a highly productive capability that many users depended on. Automator is the only reliable workaround, but it feels janky and doesn't behave like true apps.

Some people only need one browser icon — that’s totally fine.

But for users who keep separate work and personal profiles, having distinct Dock icons makes a huge difference:

• You always know which profile you’re opening

• Each profile can live in its own macOS Space / fullscreen desktop, especially with multiple monitors.

• You avoid mixing tabs, logins, and sessions

• You can Command-Tab directly into the correct profile

• Workflows stay cleaner and more organized

It’s not about preference as much as productivity and separation of contexts.

macOS used to allow this, and many people relied on it — so losing it is a real regression for those who work that way.

Granted, I say all of this as a former Mac user who switched to Windows for a while, then came back to macOS and am really happy overall - just a little frustrated by some of the limitations.

Safari has profiles but no way to launch a specific profile from the Dock for easier access.

You can configure certain websites to always open with specific profiles. That should do what you're asking.

Otherwise, I've seen many 3rd party solutions and/or scripting for doing what you're asking. I haven't tried any of those, so I can't recommend them. Here's one, out of many.

Hmmm. You can't have multiple icons of the same browser with different profiles in the Dock. Or is that what your brother figured out? Sometimes I'm a little dense. 🤔

My brother figured out how to do what the OP wants to do (but with Chrome and Windows). He had two different Chrome icons in the Windows equivalent of the Dock. Both are running. It confused me. He explained one was personal and the other was for the work he is doing for a museum.

Perhaps there's a busy signal? ;-)

Yes, apparently it's possible in Windows according to the OP…

At least that's what I inferred.

I've used Windows every working day for the last twenty-odd years, so I'm at least reasonably conversant. It was new to me.
