Text messages and threads after changing Apple ID

If I change the Apple ID on my iPhone, will all text messages go through to the new ID? I understand messages from the old account would be removed, but I need to change the ID, and don't want to lose access to talk to people. Also, will it start a new message thread for the other people when it's changed, or will the old thread be merged with the new one for the other people I contact (on their end)?
