Messages app mute function not working for group chat

iPhone 15 running iOS 18.7.1, Messages app issue, I’m in a group chat but I have notifications set to “mute” on that group however I still get notifications. I’ve tried un-muting and re muting but still get notifications set. Some times the mute function works as it’s supposed too but at times I get notifications even when the group is muted. What else can I do? Hopefully I don’t need to leave the group to stop getting these notifications.
