Purpose of Spotlight?

What (and "why") is the Spotlight function? It occasionally pops up without warning, seemingly unbidden by me, as I'm entering text. That which I've entered is in a separate "box" on the page, in very large text. Takes a moment or two to exit from it, must reenter all of the text contained in that separate box. I don't understand its purpose, don't understand why / how it is activated. (I will note that I am a somewhat sloppy keyboarder; from time to time I'll find myself in ALL CAPS because I accidentally brush against that key. Maybe I'm unwittingly summoning Spotlight ...) Anyway, at present it's nothing but a problem for me. What benefit might it provide, and how could I intentionally activate it if I thought that to be useful to me? Thanks in advance for all thoughts that you can offer ...

Sportlight is a search system. It maintains an index of data on your drive (files, images, music, applications, etc.) and lets you search the index to quickly find what you're looking for.

Recent extensions to Spotlight include adding external lookups, so you can use it to search anything - not just files on your drive, but anything on the web, too.

It can be invoked by a keystroke - typically Command-Space by default. So either you're accidentally(?) hitting command space, or the keystroke has been changed from the default and you're hitting that.

Looking for that file name? Command-Space -> type anything in the filename. Done.

Want to launch an application? Command-Space -> type the app name. Done.

Want to find that letter you wrote to Aunt Maude last year? Command-Space -> type 'Aunt Maude' and get a list of all the documents containing her name. Done

Need to call cousin Paul but can't remember his number? Command-Space -> type 'Paul' and there's his contact details. Done.

The list goes on.

Check System Settings -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Spotlight to check what key combination is assigned to Spotlight. You can change it here (or disable it completely if you prefer).

If you're not familiar with Spotlight, I would recommend spending a little time getting to know it before blindly turning it off. It can be very useful to have a global search at your fingertips, right behind a Command-Space.

One of my favorite new features in Spotlight is using Command-Space to bring up Spotlight then Command-4 to bring up a list of things that I recently copied. Selecting the one I want allows me to paste it without having to copy it again. This is great if you freqently need to paste the same thing.

It makes it ever so much easier for me to paste the Feedback link!

It's not perfect. I think the number of items is limited and I believe it clears every day/after restarting.
