Cannot import photos from iPhone to MacBook Air

I can't import new photos from my iPhone 12 Pro to my Macbook Air (2015). I'm using iOS 26.1 (latest update) and Monterey 12.7.6. When I connect my phone, the Photo app doesn't see most of the photos on my phone, and nothing recent. My last import was late September, so not sure if latest iPhone update created an issue or not. I've tried two different cables that have worked in the past for photo imports, restarted both laptop and phone, but little or no difference. Of the 5400 photos on my phone, when attempting import to Photo app, only about 800 are recognised as either new or already imported (and the "new" ones are a several years old).
